Scutellaria lateriflora: a valuable herb for the treatment of anxiety and its co-morbidities?
C. Brock, I. Tewfik, A. Towell and J. Whitehouse University of Westminster
Anxiety is a common but potentially serious disorder as it can lead to somatic problems and social dysfunction. As orthodox anxiolytics are associated with unpleasant side-effects and dependency, there is a need for safe, well-tolerated and effective alternatives.

Is Traditional Use of Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum Cuspidatum) Borne Out By Modern Research?
Daisy Allen and Jay Mackinnon
Japanese Knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum) has been used as a medicinal herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine for many hundreds of years but is relatively unknown in Western Herbalism despite being an invasive weed in the UK. Knotweed has attracted significant research interest, due in part to its resveratrol content. Modern data are consistent with historical data for many of its applications.
*****
An investigation into the herbal treatment of hypercholesterolaemia.
Helen Duxbury and Ally Broughton
Hypercholesterolaemia (HC) is regarded as a significant risk factor for cardiovascular disease. Western medical herbalists treat patients with HC with apparent success, but research into how this is achieved and why such treatment appears to be effective seems to be lacking. A case study method was used to evaluate herbal treatment of HC using qualitative, retrospective data analysis.
